“Dejad a los niños venir a mí, y no se lo impidáis; porque
de los tales es el reino de Dios” (Lucas 18:16). Probablemente este sea el
pasaje en relación a los niños más mal interpretado de la Biblia. El error
consiste en cómo se entiende la expresión “reino de Dios”. Para muchas personas
es un equivalente del cielo. Por tanto, Jesús estaría afirmando que el cielo es
para los niños, con lo cual, el solo hecho de ser niños les garantizaría su
salvación.
El problema es que la expresión “reino de Dios” no se usa
para referirse al cielo. A lo sumo, se usa para referirse al reino que Jesús
establecerá en la tierra en su segunda venida. La mayor parte de veces “reino
de Dios” se refiere al nuevo sistema de valores y modelo de vida que Jesús vino
a enseñar. Entrar al “reino de Dios” es un equivalente a la transformación
radical del individuo. Lo que también llamamos conversión.
Aclarado eso, el sentido de las palabras iniciales de Jesús
cambia totalmente. Significan algo así: “Dejad a los niños venir a mí, y no se
lo impidáis; porque para ellos es la conversión”. Lejos de enseñar una
salvación automática de los niños el pasaje habla de la necesidad de redención
que tiene todo niño. Esta es la base bíblica para todo esfuerzo evangelizador a
favor de la infancia: La necesidad de un encuentro con Cristo que todo niño
tiene. Mientras no comprendamos esto no entenderemos el sentido de ningún
esfuerzo evangelizador dirigido a los niños. Y mucho menos el trabajo celular
con niños.
Jesus and the children.
“Let the little children come
to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”(Luke
18:16). This could probably be the most misinterpreted children’s related
passage in the Bible. The mistake is about how the expression “kingdom of God”
is understood. To a lot of people it is an equivalent to heaven. Therefore,
Jesus would be asserting that heaven is for children, whereupon, just the fact
of being children would guarantee them their salvation.
The problem is that the expression “Kingdom of
God” is not used to refer to heaven. At most, it is used to refer to the
kingdom that Jesus will establish on earth at His second coming. Most of the
times “kingdom of God” refers to the new system of values and life model that
Jesus came to teach. To enter the “kingdom of God” is an equivalent to the
radical transformation of the individual, which we also call conversion.
Having cleared that out, the meaning of the
opening words of Jesus completely changes. They mean something like this: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of
such is the conversion”. Far from teaching an automated salvation of
children the passage speaks of the need of redemption that every child has. This is the biblical foundation for all
work of evangelization in favor of children: The need that every child has to
have an encounter with Christ. Until we understand this, we won’t understand
the meaning of any evangelization work directed to children. And much less,
cell work with children.
