Changing society through children.

As we completed the elements for our work with children’s cells we got the plan under way. The idea was enthusiastically received by the church since the beginning. As the leaders were being trained for the children's cells, we began to make a transition from the groups of children that were attended in homes to turn them into children’s cells.

At this moment we take care of approximately 27,000 children in our cells. Our next goal is to take care of 100,000 in order to change the social situation that the city lives in. We believe that if we manage to plant the seed of the gospel into thousands of children, the Word of God will be enough to keep that future youth away from violence, drugs and delinquency. That will produce a very positive impact and, in this way, the church will fulfill its role of being light and salt of the earth.

Lessons for children's cells.
One of the main difficulties we found when designing the lessons for children´s cells was the heterogeneity of children's ages. Since our cell model is of a geographical type it was not possible for us to have children´s cells for three to five years old children, and others for children from six to eight years of age, and so on.
We knew that in a same cell we could have children so small that didn´t go to school yet, next to others that did have the ability to read and write. How could we have the adecuate type of lessons for children of all ages?
We found the answer in the Jewish method of teaching children. Its’ two foundations were the memorization and the use of narration. We designed the model of our lessons based on these two elements.
The children´s cell meeting is designed to last one hour. Starts with the ice-braker, which is related to questions that’ll introduce the topic of the day. Then follows a section that we call "Search on the Bible." It is a recreational resource for kids to find in the teaching passage certain keywords. Since this dynamic is done in pairs or groups of threes, children who can not read are thrilled to participate too.
Then comes the teaching. This is mainly narrative. Is short, adjusted to the characteristics of children atention. Then, follows the repentence call and the prayer for children who convert.
It ends with the memorization of a short verse that summarizes the teaching of the day.
The guide has been very well received. When we dedicated a quarter term to the teaching of children's rights from a biblical perspective, the material reached El Salvador’s UNICEF offices. They were so interested in the lessons that 70,000 copies of our children´s cell guide were printed to be distributed for free among the country's churches and schools for the teaching of boys and girls’ rights.
Obviously, we have this material available only in Spanish.

Characteristics of children's cells Readers.
We defined the profile we needed to start our first training course for leaders of children's cells. Obviously, we were looking for people that were born again, baptized in water, of good reputation, and full of the Holy Spirit.
The minimum age was set on 16 years. The fact that these cells are for children does not mean that the leader has to be another child. The work of evangelizing and making disciples out of children is not a game. We needed responsible people, and that's why we decided that the leaders could be grownups, parents, etc., but never children under 16 years of age.
Another important element is the vocation or aptitude. Not all people have the patience or the grace needed to be children's leaders. Because of that, it has been left up to each person the choice to work with adults or children's cells. Only the person knows if he or she has the inclination to work or not with children.
Finally, we set as a condition for leaders of children's cells to go through the training course. This course was designed especially for children's cells and has additional components from the adult's cell. Today, after several years of working with children's cells, the teaching has been systematized into a Training Center where the leaders are trained in contents such as Children's Theology and Children's and Adolescents Rights, in addition to the traditional contents of the cell work.

Let the children come to the Lord.
As we examined our previous experience working with children in the houses, we made another important discovery. It happened that adults and children’s attendance was almost the same in the adults cells and in the meetings that took place somewhere in the house to entertain the children while their parents where in the cell meeting.
Logic made us think that for each adult cell there was another children’s meeting going on in some corner of that house. But as we did a census, we were surprise to find that only half of the adults’ cells had a separate meeting to entertain children.
That led us to understand that while the average attendance to the cells was 9 adults, at the children’s meetings the average attendance was 19. This phenomenon could be explained only by children’s nature which is more sensitive to God’s things. Without making a specific effort the children had been enthusiastically attending the meetings on their own initiative.
It is important to clarify that at the beginning of our cell work we did not count children’s attendance or either include it in our statistics. Therefore, leaders focused on adults and didn’t pay much attention to children.
So we wondered: Without making an effort children want to come to the Lord, what would happen if we make an effort to reach them? We also wondered, why not count and include them in the statistics? Aren’t they human beings in need of salvation?
This is how we launched to this task, which was new to us, to work with children’s cells and to try to rescue the new generation for Christ.

¿Comentarios? ¿Ideas?

Bible school and cells.
There were practical reasons that initially led us to shift the Bible School teaching for children to the houses. But as we started to design the first training course for leaders of children’s cells, new elements added up.
One was the reflection on how the New Testament church did to instruct children into Christianity. It was obvious that what today is called “Bible School” is a relatively modern term. It was born with Robert Rikes in 1780. Rikes’ idea was not exactly what we now know as Bible School. Rikes’ School included literacy, math and Bible classes. It would not be until 1889 when the Bible School would specialize in teaching the Scriptures.
But how did the New Testament church do to teach the faith to children? We know that the church was born following the Jewish traditions and within this tradition the two great pillars of education were memorization and oral tradition. Both elements were present at home.
So we decided to have memorization and oral tradition as pillars of the education in children's cells. I mean, to give true value to the memorization of the Scriptures and the oral transmission of the teachings, rather than focusing on expensive methodologies or on making handcrafts.
With these two elements as main axles we began to design the training course for leaders of children's cells. It was an effort to return to the New Testament’s church model.
