CULTURA Y PRINCIPIOS CELULARES.

Culture and cell principles.
Due to my last week’s blog, Mike Mack asks about what are the main differences between the Salvadorian and American culture.
I can point out two important elements: first of all, the Salvadorians are much more open to relations with their neighbors. All people know each other and greet, children play together in the street, visits are frequent and sometimes for no important reason.
Second, the Salvadorian is highly religious, shows openness and respect for the Bible and for those who teach it. The churches are at the top of the list of the institutions that generate to him the highest confidence.
Obviously, this does not mean that the cell model can not work in the American culture. All it means is that the grounds are different. The expectations regarding results can not be the same.
The cell model is the one from the New Testament’s church. Consequently, it is part of the gospel and of being church. The principles are universal and not peculiar to a specific culture. The truth of God is the truth in every place. The seed will bare its fruit in its season, according to the type of ground where it was planted. Although in some cultures more effort is needed, the work must be accomplished with the certainty that the Word will not return to Him empty.

The place for evangelism.
Evangelism is not the only component in a cell but is one that should not be neglected. The growth in knowledge and communion are components that must balance evangelism but never displace it to a second or third position.
It's much easier to focus on knowledge or in fellowship than to do so in evangelism. A greater effort is required for this since it involves engaging people who don’t have that much contact with faith.
If I were to make an observation on our church’s growth, I would mention the evangelism as an element that is carefully worked. In the recent past year the relation between brothers and guests attending our cells was of 1 for 2.1
This means that for every Christian attending a cell, we had an average of 2.1 guests. Putting it in very practical terms, one could say that every Christian invited at least two friends each time that attended a cell. That is revealing information since it shows that the cell nucleus not only attends to greet brethren or to grow in faith. There is a determined effort to reach the lost.

Preserving the freshness of the movement.
The church’s history shows an oscillating behavior between the movement and institutionality. The movement counts on the dynamism, expansion and freshness. In contrast, when the movement comes to be institutionalized, its dynamism ceases and acquires less flexible structures but that are more lasting in time. That institution is in danger of becoming dry and of demanding the shaking for a new movement to awake.
Up to now, the cellular work has preserved the characteristics of a movement. But little by little, it is institutionalizing. This is not necessarily negative since the institution allows the values of the movement to systematize and be preserved over time. But there is also a risk that the institution will dry and become another pious tradition.
How can we ensure that despite the necessary institutionalization the cell work may preserve the freshness of the movement? The only way is by maintaining a balance between the two elements. This is easily said but difficult to put into practice.
The key lies in maintaining a balance that can only be given by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. It is not about a human calculation but of a dependence on God that directs His work wisely. The truth is that the institution that becomes dry is the one that at some point broke its dependence on God.
The cell work will retain its freshness only when the Word of God and the Holy Spirit remain as the center of this whole movement. The Holy Spirit will enlighten his people to interpret His word in each new circumstance of life. The relevance of the Word will be an expression of the ways that the Spirit will open.
This work will be only perceived by those that with an attentive ear retain their communion with God; there you will find the key for the cell movement to retain the dynamism and conquest.

Between movement and institution.
The Christian church was born as a movement that spread very fast reaching many nations. As time passed, the church began to institutionalize and at the same time its characteristics of movement began to fade.
The institutionalized church has needed at various times, revivals that generate new renewal movements. Through time these ones begin to institutionalize as well.
Not everything in a movement is good, or bad in the institution. The movement has the advantage of freshness, dynamism, and enthusiasm. But only the institutionalization can retain the results of a movement and preserve them over time.
Regarding the cellular model, we still continue to call it a movement. And it is indeed. The cell movement is spreading rapidly throughout the world, it has freshness and dynamism. However, many studies have already been made and many books have been written. Entire denominations have adopted the model which is part of their methodology of work. Are we, then, before the beginning of the institutionalization of the cell work? Probably. But as I said before, that is not necessarily bad.
The key lies in maintaining a balance between the movement and the institution. This is not easy but possible. We will talk about this on the following week. But meanwhile, what do you think of this?

Cells’ work motivations.
The cell’s subject is usually associated with church growth. And the desire for growth may have several motivations. There are people who desire to have growth in order to build a mega church and become a famous icon within his area.
There will always be someone who desires to have growth to become the Pastor with the largest number of church members in the city. Others might want to have a lot of members with the only purpose to increase the church’s income. Finally, behind the desire for growth a multitude of motivations can hide.
However, God will only bless those who have the right reasons or motivations. Those motivations are the desire to adopt the model that the New Testament shows for the church and the desire to live as a community that grows in fellowship, evangelism and knowledge.
Not every cell church will become a mega church, but every cell church can live the values of the Kingdom of God. Whenever there is a sincere and pure heart, God wont stop blessing such a person.
Motivations are then an essential element when talking about cell work.
What do you think of this?

Cell churches in Chile.
In the years of 2000 and 2002 Joel Comiskey and I went to Chile to conduct two national conferences on cell work. The first was held in Viña del Mar and the second in Santiago, Chile. Both conferences were organized by the Baptists churches.
The past weekend, and after 7 years from the last conference, I was invited once again by the Living Hope Baptist Church in the city of Linares to a new conference.
This activity shocked me in a very favorable way, in the first place because the program alternated my teachings with the teachings of two other Chilean pastors. This is very important, because the pastors whom a few years ago went to learn the fundamentals of cell work are now teaching their brothers on the subject.
One of the pastors expounded on the subject of the leader’s profile, while the second one expounded on the subject of the vision. Both did a great job. In recent years, several of these churches made their transitions to become cell churches. Others are in the transition period and only a couple of the 200 registered pastors have not yet started their cell work.
Living Hope Baptist Church of Pastor Carlos Chea, one of the speakers, is a church that uses contemporary worship music for their services; the brethren clap their hands and have many expressions of joy which isolates them from the traditionalism that characterizes the Baptists churches. But it is not only about songs, but of a surprising familiarity with the cells subject. The church is involved in cell work in a high percentage and has increased its membership 10 times in the last 7 years.
It is gratifying to know that that humble seed we sowed with Joel has now given fruit into an incipient but healthy native cell movement in Chile. Thank God for His endless mercy.

The supervision continues.
One of our branch churches’ Pastor, after having reached more than 300 cells, decided to conduct a thorough evaluation. He found a lot of distortions and inconsistencies with the model.
Given the circumstances, he decided to implement a correction plan that lasted for nearly a year. During that time the leaders were trained once again and the supervision structure was changed. The Pastor estimates that when restarting the work he will do so with about 100 cells. That is, a third of what he had before.
The reason why a model may pick up a number of deformities resides in the lack of supervision on a permanent basis. Moreover, it is a mistake to think that the model has been healed with these corrections and new training. At first all things will be in order. But if no detailed supervision is applied, the same defects will be repeated.
This actual experience shows the important value of supervision. Nothing can take its place. Therefore, not only supervision must be held but it must be strengthened and perfected. The first supervisor is the Pastor himself. His dedication to the cell work will be determining for things to go well. The greater involvement of the Pastor, the greater the certainty that things will go in the right direction there will be.
