Children cells in the face of youth violence.

One frequent question is if our children cells’ leaders are also children. The answer is no. The minimum age to be a children cell leader is 16. That is because of the expectations we have from those leaders. Although it might seem Paradoxical, the training to become a children cell leader is more extensive than the one we use to become an adult cell leader.
Besides learning the basics of cell work, the children cells’ leader must also learn the additional elements to work with children. Among those elements are the pedagogy and themes like the mistreatment and child abuse.
Most of the children cells’ leaders are adults and this is currently a very important element against the phenomenon of the youth gangs that our country lives. The profile of children and youth that enter the gangs usually include their families’ disintegration. Feeling the lack of family ties they seek in the gang the sense of belonging and affection. Children cells come in the way of such situation opening their arms to grant these children and youth the attention and affection they need. Thus, a preventive work against violence is made.
Today, we assist approximately 27,000 children in our cells but the goal is to reach 100,000. That would be the 10% of the population in the capital and with that we would be impacting society in a broader way.

Children Cells.
When we initiated our cell work the assistance to the Children emerged as something marginal: We needed them to be taken care of while the adults attended the cell. They were taken to another area of the host house and somebody entertained the children. Usually, the responsibility was delegated to another child barely older than the rest and he was left “on His mercy”.
Years later I started to reflect on what a serious lapse that was on our system. The children were people with real needs and it was not possible to continue just amusing them for an hour. Without knowing that other cell churches already had the Children cells model, I dedicated myself to design a more effective way of attention for our children. I did not know I was inventing the wheel.
Once I had an initial foundation I convoked for a training conference of a couple of weeks for Children cells’ leaders. I defined the profile we wanted in a leader and I personally imparted the first training course.
The basic components were the following: to have leaders with a true calling, create a specific training for Children cells’ leaders, write a lessons guide specifically for Children, respond to the social reality that Salvadoran Children live.
We started the work in that manner and rapidly it started baring fruits. Today and thanks to the support of other brothers and sisters the work with Children is noticeably different. In fact, at Elim it takes three times more, in time of training, to become a Children cell’s leader than to be an adult’s cell leader.
Years later, I acknowledged that what I thought to be one of our particularities was a path through which other cell churches had been fairly passing by. But, it is interesting how the need to present the Gospel to the Children in a responsible way led us to results very alike to the efforts of other Christians in the planet.

Jesus and the children.
Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”(Luke 18:16). This could probably be the most misinterpreted children’s related passage in the Bible. The mistake is about how the expression “kingdom of God” is understood. To a lot of people it is an equivalent to heaven. Therefore, Jesus would be asserting that heaven is for children, whereupon, just the fact of being children would guarantee them their salvation.
The problem is that the expression “Kingdom of God” is not used to refer to heaven. At most, it is used to refer to the kingdom that Jesus will establish on earth at His second coming. Most of the times “kingdom of God” refers to the new system of values and life model that Jesus came to teach. To enter the “kingdom of God” is an equivalent to the radical transformation of the individual, which we also call conversion.
Having cleared that out, the meaning of the opening words of Jesus completely changes. They mean something like this: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the conversion”. Far from teaching an automated salvation of children the passage speaks of the need of redemption that every child has.  This is the biblical foundation for all work of evangelization in favor of children: The need that every child has to have an encounter with Christ. Until we understand this, we won’t understand the meaning of any evangelization work directed to children. And much less, cell work with children.

God and the family.
Carlos was a drunk. Because of that he lost his house and job. He left his wife and eventually got together with a younger woman who was willing to put up with his alcoholism.
His problem was growing and he had to be hospitalized when he reached dangerous levels of intoxication. It was then when he came to know Jesus in a cell near his house. Shortly after, his second couple also came to know Jesus and began attending the cells and the congregation.
Some weeks after we talked and he told me about his family situation. He had separated from his wife since several years from then and did not even know where she lived. He had been living several years with this second woman. He asked me what he could do in his case.
Since all that had happened in his life without Christ I suggested he divorced his wife and form a new home with his current couple. He listened very attentively but then he said: "Thanks for your advice, I understand but I feel I should go back and save my marriage". That seemed crazy after so many years but I respected his decision.
Several months after, on one day he came to church and introduced me to his wife. He had invited her to church and she had agreed. Over time, his wife also came to know Jesus. But now the wife and the mistress were in the same congregation.
At that time we sang a welcome song. While singing it the brethren greeted each other. I watched with amazement how these two women approached during that song and hugged in a very sincere manner. The rivalry for the same man did not exist.
Over time, Carlos decided to leave his second couple and return to his wife. The three continued congregating in the church because they understood that now they had new life in Christ. Several years later she who had been Carlos second couple married another brother and formed a happy home.
Now they all serve in the church. Carlos is a deacon and both his wife and the other young girl are deaconesses. I will never forget this-so dramatic case and all that God can do for the family.

The cell as a family group.
Our cell work began more because of intuition than because of knowledge; more because of enthusiasm than because of familiarity with the values. The trigger was Pastor Cho's first books which were translated into Spanish. One of them was called "Family groups and church growth." Precisely because the title was "family groups" we decided to adopt the name and during the first years of work our cells were called "family groups."
But it was not only a matter of name. There was a determined effort for our cells to be precisely that: family meetings in houses. The entire families were encouraged to meet in the houses. Furthermore, the involvement of the whole family in the work was impelled. For example, the father could be the leader, the mother the host; a son could welcome the guests, the daughter could lead the opening prayer, etc...
The idea was to use the cells not only as an effective mean of evangelism but also as a resource to strengthen families. Subsequently, children’s attendance began to be abundant to the "family groups". There were so many children that some people decided to take care of them separately so that adults could be undisturbed during the meeting. In the early years I always opposed and insisted that it was not necessary to take the children to a different place. My proposal was that each parent could take care of their kids while participating in the "family group".
Later, when meeting Joel Comiskey, Ralph Neighbour and other teachers on the cell subject, I realized that what we called “family groups" were called "cells" worldwide. It was then that I decided to change the name to "cells" to be in tune with the universal language.  But it was an extraordinary stage the one we lived with the cells as a resource to strengthen the families with the faith.

The hosts’ family.
There is no doubt that the host family of a cell is key to achieve multiplication. Hosts are in a position of stalwartness since their influence over their friends has as core their house, where the cell is held. This is an advantage that none of the other cell members have.
Therefore, the hosts’ work is essential to achieving the multiplication goals. But that influence can be annulled when things are not going well in the family. People are very susceptible to the problems they perceive in the homes and that gives them the perfect excuse for not attending a cell any more.
The health of the hosts’ family determines the health of the cell. The theme of the family has been worked hard by the Christian churches. It is one of the emphases that characterize the gospel. However, any effort made will be well worth. This is why it is important that churches continue to work on teachings such as the strengthening of relationships between parents and children, the relationships between couples and even how the family should relate to the neighborhood.
People believe a lot more on facts rather than on words and therefore all the effort we invest in educating and strengthening Christian families especially the hosts’ families will never be too much.

Life focused on community.

There is no doubt that the first century Mediterranean culture was strongly oriented toward the corporate rather than to the individual. Today the opposite is happening in many societies: individualism is the hallmark. That individualistic life is stimulated by the individual rights of the Western democracies. People elaborate a cultural construction that governs all ambits of their life. This means that the sense of life in community, which is needed for cell work, faces a culture clash that encourages people to the self-centered lifestyle. To change the people’s culture is something you do not easily do, neither in the short term. But it is not impossible. In fact, Christianity has shaped world culture. It did it from its foundations and throughout a protracted period of time. The implementation of life approach in community, throughout the cells, should be undertaken with enthusiasm. Things will not be easy at first. But if you persevere, people will start to discover the coincidence that exists between community life and the teachings of the Gospel. We will have to wait for the next generation to see a change in cultural orientation, but those who start the work today will have the satisfaction of having been pioneers of a truly worthwhile cause.
