Praying for the guests and their needs.
The cell, as such, experiments a life of prayer. This is an agreed prayer, that is, the cell members gather to pray for specific requests.
In the planning meeting, held just days before the cell meeting, the core gathers to prepare the work for the following cell meeting. An important part of that planning is the agreed prayer for each of the persons to be invited. Their names have been previously written down by the leader and intercession is made for their conversion.
Another important moment of prayer in the cell is produced on the very same day of the cell meeting. At the end of the teaching, an agreed prayer is made for the attendees expressed needs. A prayer for the sick and for other situations is made. It is a prayer which is also made in agreement.
The practice of prayer in the cell becomes a unifying element for its members, mainly to the cell’s core. Produces a spiritual bond that strengthens the fellowship. Each time there are unexpected situations or special needs, people are already predisposed for prayer. In addition, topics such as growth, multiplication, conversion and training of new leaders are included in their agreed prayer.

Prayer and church growth.
Due to the fact that Elim learned about cell work from Pastor Cho’s church in Korea, we knew from the start that prayer plays an important role in church growth.
The practice of prayer, besides being promoted on a personal level, it is also promoted on a corporate level. As a church, we have undertaken a number of systematic prayer campaigns.
At present, we have four years since we started a new effort of fasting and prayer. Everyday, an average of 60 to 100 people pray for five specific requests. Within these five requests the five-year church growth goals are mentioned.
At other times, we have made more intensive prayer efforts. Like when we made continuous prayer chains for 24 hours during periods of 30 days. These more intense prayer efforts have been made for more specific needs, as when preparing for a big rally.
Moreover, at present, we are making another extra effort; the whole church is praying and fasting one day of each month specifically for the problem of violence in the country. El Salvador is probably the country with the highest homicide rate in Latin America. In that day of fasting, which is one Saturday of each month, not only the mega church gathers to pray in the capital city, but also the other branch churches that are located throughout the country and even churches of other denominations.
The prayer is made for six specific requests and it is conducted in a synchronized way since the prayer is aired on the church’s television channel and on its six radio stations. The branch churches project the television channel’s image in their localities or connect to their local sound the audio from the radio. In that way, the entire country is praying for the same requests at the same time.
Prayer is seen as a normal thing by the church and the people are willing to be part of these efforts. For them this is not a burden but a practice they enjoy.

Approaches on cell work.

When speaking at conferences of the little we know on cell work, there is a frequent question we are asked regarding the way how we manage to make disciples within the cells. People are surprised when I answer that we reserve the making of disciples for the celebrations; while the meetings in houses focus on evangelization.
The reason for this is due to Elim’s own history. The church was born with a traditional work where its main component was precisely its excellent teaching to make disciples. After nine years, the church made its transition to a cell church. The cells were always seen as an evangelization instrument and not to make disciples. The brethren wanted to share what they had learned in church with the invited friends.
Since then, things have continued the same course of action. The brethren will be trained in the celebration service. They know that's where they receive their theological formation and were they grow in maturity. The cells are devoted uniquely to friends. Its purpose is the presentation of the Gospel.

From that perspective, the cell teaching is limited to a simple presentation of Jesus as The Savior. All the effort is focused on rescuing the lost. I think the emphasis on evangelism within the cell has allowed us to configure a framework of conquest and salvation. I appreciate and respect very much those cell churches that use the meetings in houses to make of their members disciples. But probably its scope will be limited talking about the evangelistic conquest. There is a risk that the cell will focus on itself rather than in the lost world that surrounds it.

More on rotating cells.

Cells that rotate from one house to another over periods of two to three weeks, have the particularity of being much more inclusive in terms of reaching people with the message of the Gospel.
When a permanent cell is opened, at first, there is a high interest among the neighbors to attend the cell. But, as months pass by, the cell stops being a novelty and a greater effort is required to bring guests.
The advantage of rotating cells is the freshness that they can always uphold. They are always a novelty since they only stay in a house for two or three weeks before rotating to another one. Because of this there are always many guests wanting to know what a cell is.
But as I said before, for us, rotating cells are not the rule. Their number is very small and we fall back on them only for specific needs. The goal is to have rotating cells turned into permanent cells.
However, I wanted to share this variant of our work. I want to insist in the fact that a rotating cell can only work when it has a very strong core, when the cell does not depend on a house but on itself.

Rotating cells.
As we started our work with cells, the enthusiasm was rapidly spread and many people began to be invited. Some friends attended a cell so many times that even got to understand a little about the work’s dynamics.
Soon people appeared, who without being Christians, asked to be hosts to have a cell in their own homes. Before such a request, we found ourselves with a situation that somehow broke the usual pattern of cell work.
To avoid giving a negative answer that could discourage these friends, we decided to start working with some rotating cells. These are cells that function in one, two or at most three weeks in the same house. Then rotate to move to a new house located nearby.
The cell continues to rotate in this way, unless one of the hosts’ families comes to the faith of the Gospel. When that happens, the cell becomes permanent and does not rotate from house to house anymore.
Obviously the key for a rotating cell to avoid losing identity is to have its core very well cemented, when this happen the cell builds up around itself, and not in relation to a particular physical space. The house may change, but the core remains the same and moves to where there is a need to shed the light of Christ.

The missionary practice of Jesus.
Jesus was a public and a multitudinous figure. Crowds followed him wherever he went. Groups of six to seven thousands of people usually followed him at a time when such amounts represented high percentages of the population of the province of Israel.
Sometimes people were so many that he had to get into a boat to move a certain distance away so everyone could hear him. At other times there were so many needy that these would oppress and crush him.
But the Master of the crowds was also a Pastor of people. He devoted time to the Samaritan woman. He had time to talk with the Pharisees in the dinners where he was invited. He went to Zacchaeus and Simon the leper’s house. He was a close friend of Lazarus and his sisters.
In his missionary practice it’s easy to identify that Jesus worked with both large groups and with smaller groups. In some way, he guided with his example, what would be the common practice of the New Testament’s church: the work with large groups and with small groups, the celebrations and the meetings in houses.
Those two components that Dr. Ralph Neighbor has called the two wings’ church, is the one that could remount to the heights of God’s expectations. The modern cell movement represents an effort to rescue the practice of the New Testaments’ Church and the missionary practice of Jesus.

The Pastor and his cell work.
Although cell work is done by all the saints, each church’s pastor is who applies the orientation that the work must have. Cell principles are universal, but the emphasis are given by the pastor of each local congregation.
A Pastor can give to his cell work an emphasis on communion and fraternity among members. A pastor can also make an emphasis on multiplication. That pastor, who emphasizes on communion will have cells with a lot fraternity but very little progress and multiplication.
For its part, the pastor who emphasizes on multiplication will have that: multiplication. The pastor is who must take the lead on cell work not only to propel it but also to give it its emphasis.
The pastor is whom with his interest, his endorsements from the pulpit, his prayers, his motivations; will make the cell work of each church have its own emphasis. Therefore the Pastor's role is critical to achieve the attempted scope.
What is the emphasis in your particular case?
