ENCUENTRO EN LA REPÚBLICA

En 1998, después de trabajar por puro instinto durante doce años con células, recibí una invitación para impartir una conferencia sobre crecimiento de la iglesia en Quito, Ecuador.
La invitación era hecha por una iglesia llamada La República, por el nombre de la importante calle sobre la cual se ubica. En ese lugar pude conocer a Joel Comiskey. Él era misionero en ese momento en Ecuador donde vivía junto a su esposa Celyce y sus tres hijas.
Al conocerlo me sorprendió todo lo que sabía sobre Elim y sobre las luchas que la iglesia había enfrentado. Pero, lo mejor llegó en el momento de escucharlo exponer. Por primera vez escuché a alguien hablando con conocimiento y con autoridad sobre el tema de las células.
Todo lo que decía era nuevo para mí. Después supe que la invitación me había sido extendida por una sugerencia de Joel al Pastor Ludeña, a quien apoyaba. Al final de la conferencia estoy seguro que fui yo quien más aprendió.
Desde entonces, nos hemos encontrado en conferencias en distintos países y ciudades y siempre aprendo algo nuevo escuchándolo. Creo que si hubiésemos contado con una asesoría de alguien como Joel al principio de nuestro trabajo las cosas hubiesen sido mucho más fáciles y firmes.
Bendigo a Dios por la vida de Joel y por el ministerio de JCG que pone al alcance de quien lo desee herramientas que hubiésemos deseado tener al principio de nuestro trabajo, pero que no tuvimos. Acá están esas herramientas. Úsalas y que Dios bendiga tu trabajo.

Meeting at The Republic.

In 1998, after working with cells for twelve years out of pure instinct, I received an invitation to impart a conference on church growth in Quito, Ecuador.
The invitation was from a church called The Republic, named after the important street on which is located. This is the place were I met Joel Comiskey. He was a missionary at that time in Ecuador where he lived with his wife Celyce and their three daughters.
When I met him I was surprised of how much he knew about Elim and the struggles the church had faced. But the best came when I listened to his speech. For the first time I heard someone speaking with knowledge and authority on the cells subject.
All he said was new to me. Later on I found out that the invitation had been extended by a suggestion made by Joel to Pastor Ludeña, whom he supported. At the end of the conference I was sure it was me who learned the most.
Since then, we have met at conferences in different countries and cities and I always learn something new by listening to him. I believe that if we’d have had counted on with an advice from someone like Joel at the beginning of our work, things would’ve been much easier and firm.
Blessed be the Lord for Joel’s life and for the JCG ministry that places tools within the reach of those who want them, which we would had liked to have at the beginning of our work, but we did not have. Here are those tools. Use them and may God bless your work.

LA BÚSQUEDA PERMANENTE DE LA EXCELENCIA

Uno de los elementos que hemos aprendido en iglesia Elim sobre el trabajo con células es que siempre se puede mejorar. El modelo celular es suceptible de mejoramiento todo el tiempo. No hablo de cambio de modelos sino de pequeños ajustes del modelo que ya se tiene.
El proceso de mejoramiento puede resumirse en los siguientes cuatro pasos:
1- Inicie su trabajo celular.
2- Evalúe los resultados.
3- Corrija lo que sea necesario.
4- Vuelva al número uno.
Éste ciclo de corrección y avance es clave para darle al trabajo celular definición y dinamismo. Serían incontables los elementos que se han corregido o mejorado por éste sencillo procedimiento.

The ongoing quest for excellence.

One of the elements we have learned in Elim church about working with cells is that you can always keep on improving. The cell model is susceptible to be improved at all time. I am not talking about changing models, but of making small adjustments to the existing one.
The improvement process can be summarized in the following four steps:
1. Start your cell work.
2. Evaluate the results.
3. Make corrections in whatever is needed.
4. Go back to number one.

This cycle of correction and progress is key to give definition and dynamism to the cellular work. The elements that have been corrected or improved by this simple procedure would be countless.

LA PRÁCTICA DE LA ORACIÓN

La oración es un tema estrechamente ligado al trabajo celular. Además de los períodos de oración incluidos en nuestras reuniones de células y de planificación, existen otros esfuerzos que se ponen en práctica.
Cuando se realizan nuestros grandes eventos nos preparamos espiritualmente con una cadena de oración. Ésta cadena tiene una duración de 24 horas durante el mes previo a nuestro gran evento.
Iniciamos el primer día del mes con un culto en el local de la iglesia que comienza a las 5 de la mañana. A partir de las 6 de la mañana, después de haber adorado y recibido una enseñanza bíblica, comienza el primer período de oración hasta las 7 de la mañana. A esa hora, en un lugar preparado especialmente, un grupo de personas ora hasta las 8 de la mañana. Éstas personas serán relevadas por otro grupo por la siguiente hora. Así sucesivamente hasta terminar la cadena el día 31 del mes.
Se puede pensar que las horas entre la 1 y 4 de la madrugada serían las más difíciles de cubrir. Pero, lo cierto es que son las horas cuando mayor cantidad de miembros de células se acercan para orar.
Se asegura que la cadena no se rompa asignando a cada Pastor de Zona cierta cantidad de horas. El Pastor distribuye sus sectores entre esas horas y, así, siempre hay quien continúe la cadena de oración donde se presentan exclusivamente cinco peticiones relacionadas con el gran evento de la iglesia.

The practice of prayer.

Prayer is a closely linked topic to the cell work. In addition to the prayer periods in our cell and planning meetings, there are other efforts that are put into practice.
When we make our big rallies we prepare spiritually with a prayer chain. This chain lasts 24 hours during the previous month to our big rally.
We start the first day of the month with a celebration service in the church’s building at 5 a.m. From 6 a.m., after worshiping and receiving a bible teaching, the first period of prayer until 7 a.m. starts. At that time, in a specially prepared place, a group of people prays until 8 a.m. Another group will replace these people for the next hour. This goes on successively until the 31st day of the month when the prayer chain ends.
It might be thought that the hours between 1 and 4 a.m. would be the most difficult to cover. But the fact is that these are the hours when the largest number of cell members comes to pray.
We make sure that the chain doesn’t brake by assigning to each Zone Pastor a certain amount of hours. The Pastor distributes his sectors between those hours, doing this, there is always someone to continue the prayer chain where exclusively five prayer requests related to the big church’s rally are presented.

OTRAS LECCIONES DE LOS EVENTOS MASIVOS.

Al relatar los resultados de nuestros eventos masivos, es evidente que en cada uno de ellos se reunió casi el cien por ciento de la asistencia que se tenía en las células.
Ese es un elemento importante porque, normalmente, las iglesias celulares enfrentan el hecho que es mayor la cantidad de personas que asisten a las células que las que asisten a la celebración. Pero, ¿qué sucedía en esos grandes eventos donde se alcanzaba casi el cien por ciento de asistencia?
Dos son los hechos que hacían tal cosa posible: una mayor cantidad de transporte y una mayor motivación. En cuanto al transporte se puede decir que en éstos grandes eventos una mayor cantidad de autobuses se pusieron a dispocisión de las personas. Las células de iglesia Elim rentan varias docenas de autobuses todas las semanas para llevar a los invitados a la celebración. Pero, en estos grandes eventos la cantidad de autobuses llegó a ser de un par de millares.
Sé que el falicitar transporte en algunos países y ciudades no es tan fácil como en El Salvador. Pero, el facilitar medios para que las personas lleguen al edificio de la iglesia es, sin duda, un factor decisivo para una mayor asistencia a la celebración. Lo cual, facilita un equilibrio entre la reunión de célula y la de celebración.

Other lessons on massive rallies.

When recounting the results of our massive rallies, it is evident that in each one of them, almost one hundred per cent of the attendance we had in our cells met.
That is an important element because, normally, cell churches face the fact that the number of people attending the cell is larger than the one attending the celebration. But, what was happening in those big rallies where almost one hundred percent of attendance was being reached?
There are two facts that did such a thing possible: a greater amount of transportation and a major motivation. Regarding the transportation we might say that in these big rallies a greater number of buses were placed at people’s service. Elim church cell’s rent dozens of buses every week to bring guests to the celebration. But, in these big rallies the number of buses came to be a couple of thousands.
I know that to facilitate transportation in some countries and cities is not as easy as in El Salvador. But, to facilitate the means by which the people will arrive to the church’s building is, undoubtedly, a decisive factor for a greater celebration attendance; which allows a balance between the cell meeting and the celebration service.

Finalidad de los grandes eventos.

La iglesia Elim llegó a realizar los grandes eventos que se han mencionado como una ocasión para reunir en un mismo lugar a toda su membresía. El hecho de poder verse mutuamente y captar lo numerosa que la iglesia era permitía que los miembros cobraran nuevas fuerzas.
Por otra parte, era una manera poderosa de dar un testimonio evangelizador al país, lo cual, se puede notar en el hecho que llegó a afectar a la clase política y a la Presidencia de la República.
Además, manifestaba de manera práctica la eficiencia del modelo celular en su capacidad de movilizar a los invitados y alcanzar metas.
En una ocasión, platicando con el Pastor Cho, me mencionó que el reunir a toda la iglesia es muy importante para lograr la inspiración de los miembros. El Pastor Cho recomienda que se hagan ese tipo de eventos al mismo tiempo que lamenta que el campo que utilizaban para reunir a un millón de sus miembros ahora se haya convertido en una plaza con jardines y edificaciones que impiden tal concentración.
Hoy, ya no les queda más opción que reunirse en el Estadio Olímpico de Seúl en donde solamente pueden llevar a 120,000 personas.
En otros países he conocido iglesias celulares que a este tipo de eventos les dan el extraño nombre de ‘macro-célula’. Pero, como sea, existe un efecto potenciador en este tipo de actividades.

The purpose of big rallies.

Elim church came to make these big rallies that have been mentioned as an occasion to gather in one place its whole membership. Being able to see each other and capture how numerous the church was allowed members to recover new strength.
On the other hand, it was a powerful way to give an evangelistic testimony to the country, which can be noticed in the fact that it affected the political class and the presidency of the republic.
In addition, it showed in a practical way the efficiency of the cell model in its ability to mobilize guests and to achieve goals.
On one occasion, speaking with Pastor Cho, he mentioned that bringing together the whole church is very important to attain the members’ inspiration. Pastor Cho recommends making such rallies and regrets at the same time that the field they once used to gather one million of its members has now been turned into a plaza with gardens and buildings that prevent from having such concentration.
Today, they have no choice but to meet in Seoul’s Olympic Stadium where they can only bring 120,000 people.
I have known cell churches in other countries that give to this kind of rallies the strange name of “macro-cell”. But, however, there is a boosting effect in this type of activities.

La pasión en acción.

Después de utilizar dos estadios simultáneamente para reunir a la iglesia, recibimos nueva pasión para extender las buenas nuevas de salvación. Pastores, supervisores y líderes se lanzaron con nuevas fuerzas a cumplir su responsabilidad.
Como resultado, la iglesia continuó creciendo. De manera que en 1999 decimos utilizar tres estadios simultáneamente. Nuevamente los estadios se llenaron con una cantidad ya cercana a los 100,000 asistentes.
Para el año siguiente, 2000, el paso lógico habría sido utilizar cuatro estadios. Pero, en lugar de ello, nos lanzamos a utilizar cinco estadios simultáneamente. De nuevo, los estadios se llenaron en su completa capacidad con una asistencia de unas 120,000 personas.
El problema es que en El Salvador solamente hay cinco estadios. Ya no podíamos seguir añadiendo estadios adicionales. De manera que proyectamos para el año 2002 reunir a la iglesia de nuevo toda junta en un campo abierto equivalente a once canchas de fútbol. En esa ocasión, la asistencia se estimó en 150,000 personas.
En 2004, volvimos a utilizar el mismo campo abierto. Esa vez un estimado de 200,000 personas se hicieron presentes. Pero el evento tenía ya tal relevancia que, en esa ocasión, asistió el Presidente de la República, varios congresistas y varios alcaldes. También se sumaron otros funcionarios de gobierno. Fue una gran oportunidad para presentarles el evangelio de Jesucristo.

The passion in action.

After using two stadiums simultaneously to gather the church, we received new passion to spread the good news of salvation. Pastors, leaders and supervisors launched themselves with new strength to fulfill their responsibility.
As a result, the church continued to grow. Therefore in 1999 we decided to use three stadiums simultaneously. Again, the stadiums were filled with a number reaching closely to 100,000 attendees.
For the next year, 2000, the logical step would have been to use four stadiums. But, instead, we embarked to use five simultaneously. Again, the stadiums were filled at their full capacity with an attendance of about 120,000 people.
The problem is that in El Salvador, there are only five stadiums. And we could not continue to add more stadiums. So we projected for 2002 to gather again the whole church in an open field equivalent to eleven soccer fields. At that time, attendance was estimated at 150,000 people.
Again in 2004, we used the same open field. This time, an estimated number of 200,000 people were present. But the rally already had such relevance that in that particular time the President of the Republic, several congressmen and several mayors attended. Other government officials joined in too. It was a great opportunity to present to them the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dos estadios.

En noviembre de 1998 la iglesia se lanzó a usar dos estadios de manera simultánea. La capacidad sumada de los dos estadios llegaba a las 90,000 personas.
El programa en ambos estadios comenzó a la misma hora. Pero, en uno de ellos, el programa se había diseñado de manera que fuera prolongándose lo suficiente como para que me diera tiempo de terminar la predicación en el primer estadio para luego trasladarme al segundo justo a tiempo para el sermón.
Dado que la prensa expresaba que no era posible que la iglesia pudiese llenar dos veces un mismo estadio tomamos una decisión audaz: utilizar un helicóptero que me pudiera trasladar de un estadio al otro. En realidad no hay mucha distancia entre los dos estadios. Pero, la idea era poder hacer una toma continua de video partiendo del primer estadio totalmente lleno hasta llegar al segundo igualmente lleno.
Al terminar la primera predicación el helicóptero descendió. Una cámara me seguía. Subimos al helicóptero. Ya en el aire el piloto sobrevoló el estadio de manera que quedara claro lo lleno que estaba. Al momento de partir hacia el segundo estadio la cámara siguió grabando sin detenerse. Dentro del helicóptero me hicieron una entrevista que duró tres minutos. Justo el tiempo para llegar por aire al segundo estadio.
El piloto sobrevoló el segundo estadio y me sentí hondamente impresionado al ver este otro estadio completamente lleno. Luego descendimos y pasé a la plataforma para la segunda predicación.
Después de ese domingo nunca más la prensa dudó que Elim era una iglesia, en verdad, numerosa.

Two stadiums.

In November 1998, the church launched itself to use two stadiums simultaneously. The combined capacity of the two stadiums reached over 90,000 people.
The program at both stadiums started at the same time. But in one of them, the program had been designed to extend long enough to give me time to finish the preaching in the first stadium, and to allow me to move right after to the second one just in time for the sermon.
Since the press stated that it was not possible that the church could fill the stadium twice, we took a bold decision: to use a helicopter that could take me from one stadium to the other. There isn't really much of a distance between the two stadiums. But the idea was to make a continuous video shooting taken from the first completely full stadium to the second one equally full.
Once I had finished the first preaching the helicopter descended to the ground. A camera was following me. We got on the helicopter. Once in the air the pilot over flew the stadium to make it clear that it was full. The camera kept on recording without stopping when departing to the second stadium. In the helicopter I was interviewed, it lasted three minutes. Time enough by air to arrive to the second stadium.
The pilot over flew the second stadium, I felt deeply impressed to see this other stadium completely full. Then we descended and I stepped onto the platform for the second preaching.
After that Sunday the press never again doubted that Elim was a large church, indeed.
