Resources for counseling.
The key in Christian counseling lies in the resources God has given to his church. Those great resources are the Word and the Holy Spirit.
The problems people face are related to human behavior. Nothing but the Word of God can explain behaviors, approving, reproving, correcting or encouraging them. Human situations are repetitive and there are no problems that can be classified as unique. All conditions have been experienced previously by other people and the Bible has the answer for each one of those situations.
Sometimes it is not easy to identify the root of the difficulties. Man’s heart is deceitful and uses denial resources to avoid responsibility. That's where the participation of the Holy Spirit is important to elucidate the truth of some situations. Perhaps people will affirm something with an evasive answer but the Holy Spirit can guide the Christian to what is really happening.
The Holy Spirit acts freely and can do so at any time and place. For that reason the work of Christian counseling cannot be restricted to the cell meeting. The Holy Spirit doesn’t have boundaries and can act in the place and time best suited.
The Christian must remain sensitive to those moments of God and rest in the fact that he possesses the resources needed for an effective counseling: The Word and the Holy Spirit.

The levels of counseling.
One of the aspects we emphasize in our cell conferences at Elim is that the leader must recognize his limitations. He is instructed to move the case to the supervisor or the zone pastor before giving an advice he is not certain with.
This should not be seen as weakness in the leader but as an act of honesty for which he remains within his capacity field. Moreover, the structure of the cell work is well known to the people in a way that is very natural for them to be transferred to another level in the system.
Almost all cases of counseling are covered by the zone pastors. But when they find a very complicated case or one that requires a more complex process of counseling, they refer it to the senior pastor.
Other people on their own initiative request from the start to be assisted by the senior pastor. In that case, a phone call is made to the person in order to know general details of his case. Doing this you achieve avoiding sellers or sending people with economical needs to the right person.
A factor we try to be very sensitive with is the issue of trust. There are people who will only open their hearts to very few people. It is important to respect such trust and not impose on people to be subject to a counseling structure. The goal is to make everyone feel they are cared for and heard in the church.

The story of the first dating relationship.
At the end of a youth cell meeting a group of teenagers stayed for a longer time sharing. This happened at the beginning of our work with youth cells. One young man asked another to share about his dating relationship, since this young man was the only one who had a girlfriend in that group.
The question came as fresh water since the rest of teenagers got excited to listen to their friend’s response. They expected to hear about the flowers and honeys of the first dating relationship. But instead of that, the young man started to falter affirming that to him his dating relationship experience had been disastrous. He and his girlfriend fought with some frequency and that produced in him an emotional pain that affected his spiritual life. They were jealous of each other and it was a conflictive relationship. He ended by saying with all aplomb: "I advise you not to have a dating relationship until a long time ahead."
Although that young man’s response does not have to reflect everybody’s experience, at least it showed to the other teens an aspect that is possible and likely to occur in a dating relationship, especially when you have not received a pastoral counseling.
Even though what was described above was not a counseling session but a talk among young friends, you cannot deny its formative value. To young people a friend’s experience is of great value, especially when it is sincere and genuine. These guys came out of that meeting with clarity about an aspect of dating relationships they had not considered before.

The cell as first aid for the needy.
When a church is responsible for tens of thousands of people is extremely difficult for the pastor to assist each person in counseling. Personally, counseling is one of the things I enjoy most. I counsel several people daily but is humanly impossible to be able to assist all the members.
But the cell model has the virtue of facilitating assistance for people no matter how numerous they are. Obviously, there are different levels of assistance. When a person has a need his immediate resource lies in the cell. People seek guidance, advice or consolation in the leader and on other members of the cell. Many difficulties are solved at that level.
There are people who mostly need to have someone to listen to them carefully. Deep down they are not looking for a word that solves the difficulty. They only want to be heard. To do this, one does not need to have any specialization. Only the willingness to listen closely and enough discretion to keep private what was privately confided.
Prayer is another important resource in the cell. People know that receiving prayer from a group of believers is a powerful tool to solve their difficulties. Prayer encourages them, comforts them, gives them strength and inspires them. These elements are simple but very effective in helping people. Of course there will be situations that need more specialized help, but the big advantage is that the cell is not an isolated island. The cell belongs to a system where there are greater resources and it is not complicated to refer people to counselors with a greater ability.

The persistence in the evaluations.
The review of the cell work at Elim is produced every week at every level. It all starts in the cell core when it gathers for the planning meeting. This is a different meeting besides the cell meeting with the guests. In the planning meeting the results from the previous week are reviewed and the next week is planned. We find among the evaluated aspects: The effectiveness in bringing guests, the way in which the assigned roles were performed, the quality of the songs and even the correctness of the snack. Everything is wrapped up with a prayer commending the work of the following week.
Something very similar happens in the supervision meeting. The zone pastor gathers with his coaches and leaders in this one and in a second moment, the coaches gather with the leaders of their sector. The work from the previous week is evaluated, recommendations are given, doubts are cleared out, people are encouraged to work and there is prayer for the different needs.
From that level, the work is transferred to the church´s offices where each district pastor meets with his zone pastors. Again, an evaluation of the previous week is produced. The evaluation is made in relation to the goal established for the quarter. Those results can move you to make changes in the number of people enrolled in the Leader´s Route, to make prayer activities to achieve more conversions or activities that allow solidifying the results.
Finally, the evaluation and improvement process ends when the district pastors consolidate their respective data and a weekly report is prepared with information of the whole church. This work is done consistently every week, with no exceptions. Persistence is one of the keys to improving the results.
