Open doors houses.
A few weeks ago I wrote about the differences between American and Salvadorian culture in relation to the evangelization work with cells. Since then, the idea has been turning over in my mind.
As a result of those thoughts, I can now add another element that I think is important. Most houses in El Salvador are small and do not have interior gardens and much less exterior ones. The houses are huddled next to each other in a continuous succession. Moreover, the country's climate is hot and having air conditioning is a luxury that few can afore.
These conditions cause people to open their houses’ doors for better ventilation and a feeling of spaciousness when they get home. Many times a closed door means that there is no one home. An open door means that the family is home.
But the custom has become cultural and the individual that locks himself with his family when he gets home to enjoy his privacy is considered strange person, which by contrast, is normative among Americans.
There is middle to high class families in El Salvador that like to preserve their privacy. But this is the least number of cases. In the large popular sectors rules the practice of keeping the doors open.
This cultural condition affects cell work because in the large popular sectors cells rapidly multiply, while in the middle and high class sectors the work is much smaller and its multiplication much slower.
Obviously, for the church would be a difficult, long and ultimately perhaps unnecessary task to attempt to change the culture of the people. But the church itself can creatively adapt to their cultural conditions. One line of work is in fact already being implemented: to create the habit of building rapport with other people, to lead a life of a greater outreach to others, to move the fellowship of the church's cafeteria to the houses’ living rooms.
Although the pace of cell multiplication in the first world is slower, the important thing is that the church is planting a precedent which, over the years, will carry a rich harvest of salvation.

Serving in a cell church
I’m writing this blog right at the end of the welcome service for the people who will carry out a privilege in church. This is a solemn worship service that takes place once every year.
Today's service had an attendance of approximately 4,000 people involved in different service areas. What are so many people doing in church?
Some work as deacons and deaconesses in the adults’ church building. We also have deaconesses for the Babies’ Church. Besides we have deacons and deaconesses for the Children’s Church. The deacons and deaconesses that serve in the youth services have to be added too.
Another group of brothers and sisters work as the Protocol Committee. They are responsible for ensuring the comfort of those attending the celebrations and to serve them properly.
Another committee is the Mass Media Committee. They are responsible for receiving the contributions for the support of our radios and television channel. We should also mention the Support Committee, which is in charge of receiving the offerings that leaders have collected in their respective cells.
There are other service areas such as library, youth, women, counselors, prisons visits, and visits to orphanages. In addition the church has 13 musical bands, ministries of social projection, sound and audio recordings.
It is important to remark the fact that to execute any of these privileges it is an essential condition to be a cell leader. While contemplating these thousands of brethren set out to serve during 2010, I can only thank God for giving to His Church such a large number of servants. To Him be the glory!

The invitation to the cell meeting.
When I got home I found under the door a small sheet of paper that said “Coffee Cells”. It was an invitation to a cell meeting in an address that I did not know and neither did I know the person who was inviting.
I don’t doubt that God is merciful and that He can reach a person with an invitation as simple as that one. But that’s not the spirit nor the method of the cell work. Of course it’s much easier to throw a paper under the door than to go through the trouble of interacting with people. But to establish a friendship with people happens to be the foundation of cell work.
To fellowship among people attending a cell is one of the purposes and components of the cell work, therefore one should not ignore that creating a new friendship is the first step to invite someone to a cell meeting.
In previous blogs I have written about the steps to succeed in bringing a guest to the cell meeting. The essential element is the relationship and friendship with the person who is intended to be invited. That definitely can not be achieved only with sliding a paper under the door.

Cell Work evaluations.
In some other times it has been mentioned the importance of making use of goals for the cell work. However, goals are not just statements of what it is wanted to be achieved. They are also a measuring parameter that turns out useful for evaluation. For that reason, in addition of setting goals for each quarter, at Elim work is evaluated in relation to those targets.
The first stage of evaluation is done every week. The leader and the cell nucleus evaluate the last week’s performance in relation to the goal. Each week, the supervisor conducts another evaluation with the leaders that belong to his sector. Finally, the zone pastors evaluate with their supervisors and leaders the week’s work. At the same time, every week each pastor hands over their evaluation report to the District pastor and this is always in relation to the goals they have set.
At the end of each quarter every Church of Elim Christian Mission conducts an evaluation of their work. The third week after the end of each quarter of the year an evaluation of the entire Mission is conducted. The Branch Churches from any country where they are send their data to El Salvador. In that way we can have an overview of how the Mission is going every three months as well as to know if the growth targets are being achieved.
This evaluating system allows us to draw the maximum benefit of setting goals. If targets are only set but are not evaluated, many of the benefits that can be obtained through them get lost.
